A multi-millionaire reveals the secret to making money at home... and bets youwon't do it. Let's see if you really want to get rich.

by  Dr. Jeffrey Lant.

Author's program note. Money. You need it. Can't do without it.  Say you're in business to get it. But I don't believe you...  so I'm going to reveal the secret right here, right now...in unmistakably clear language, so simple a child could"get it"... It's the formula you've waited a lifetime to hear, not least because you'll realize from the first word you read it's the God's honest truth. Yet you'll find a whole pocketful of "reasons" why you can't possibly do this... now...or ever.

Even so you'll continue to tell everyone who is daft enough to listen that you're working hard to make your business a success; you'll probably even manage to convince yourself. But in your heart of hearts you'll know you were given the great secret to success... and just won't do it.

This article, so timely, so true, so right on the money requires a tune that creates just the right atmosphere. I've chosen "Manana" with its cynically rics that summarize your approach to your "business".

"The faucet she is dripping and the fence she's falling down My pocket needs some money so I can't go into town My brother isn't working and my sister doesn't care The car she needs a motor so I can't go anywhere."

And then the famous refrain "Manana. Manana. Manana is soon enough for me." Go find this tune in any search engine. Dean Martin's version is excellent, but you can't beat the 1947 version by Miss Peggy Lee. She was after all the composer(along with Dave Barbour). It is pure acid... and since she's singing about you, you'll be sure to feel the bite.

"Never trust a man who isn't a millionaire by 30." Herbert Hoover, the first millionaire to be President of the United States.

Let me tell you something about rich people, particularly self-made rich people. They will evaluate you by how successful you are. Why? Not just because they are plutocratic snobs (though some certainly are) but because they know what it takes to make money... and they know that if you're not rich (or well on the way) you probably don't have what it takes. Like it or not, fair or not, whether the world should be this way or not, none of this matters. To impress the wealthy you must be wealthy because that indicates you're someone worth knowing, someone who knows the secret to making money whenever you like. If this depresses or disheartens you, GET OVER IT. And get down to doing the needful.

Look at your marketing documents. Could they make anyone jump up, grab the phone and call you?

Right this minute you probably see your phone. It may be a land line; it may be a cell phone. What kind of phone doesn't matter. But what DOES matter is that it's right in front of you... and it isn't ringing off the hook. That's the problem we're going to do something about.

There will always be money... money is the easiest thing in the world to get...If...

Consider this: when all the air is toxic; when all the water is polluted... when one animal species after another is wiped out and gone forever, there will still be plenty of money. That's because money is man made. We can create as much as we want. The question, therefore, is do you know how to get more, far, far more than your share? The answer is to be found in your current ads, brochures, websites, in any marketing communications at all.

Have you asked your customer to pick up the phone and call you now... and have you made this invitation right at the top of your document, as sharply, as clearly, as motivating as possible?

Chances are you probably haven't, because (if truth be told) you don't run this kind of client-centered business... and don't want to... because this means work and work isn't what you had in mind:

"The window she is broken and the rain is comin' in If someone doesn't fix it I'll be soaking to my skin But if we wait a day or two the rain may go away And we don't need a window on such a lovely day."

By now, you may be writhing, seething with indignation and anger. You are thinking... you are saying out loud, "I am not the wastrel Dr. Lant says. He's got me all wrong. I know the importance of work to ensure success. I know it... and I'll do it. Just tell me precisely what to do, and I'll do it... so help me!"

Very well. You asked for it, and I shall oblige.

1) Gather every marketing document. What I am telling you will alterevery one.

2) Look at how you start the copy for each document. Is there an IMMEDIATE call to action? In other words, have you opened with the most important thing, the thing that gets your reader to CALL YOU NOW?

3) Does your opening look like this?

Call  now for your FREE CONSULTATION. I am standing by to help you right  now 24/7/365.

Pick up the phone RIGHT NOW and find out how you can profit online STARTING TODAY.

Ask for me (your name). I am ready to talk to you NOW.

(Include your complete phone number with country code and area code.Remember, you want an international clientele and this means making it easy for these people to connect with you.)

Now the hard part. Living it!

Having made the call to action, will you be ready when the customer responds?

1) Will you take the call, on the very first ring, night and day, regular week-day or week-end or holiday? Or will you kill the entire process by forcing the customer to leave a message, which you'll respond to "as soon as it's convenient for me"?

2) If you are forced by circumstances to make the customer leave a message, will you return the call within the hour, thereby indicating how client-centered and efficient you are? Or will you offend the customer and destroy the chance for a remunerative relationship by delaying your response for spurious""reasons"?

3) Will you send all necessary materials to the customer at once, preferably by e-mail, always asking for customer receipt confirmation? Or will you make that all important customer wait... wait.... your chance for a sale wilting?

4) Will you ask for the sale as soon as possible, making sure the"ask" is not forced, not rushed, not premature but made at precisely the right time? Or will you make the customer tell you he wants to proceed, thereby saving you the bother ---but probably costing you the sale?

5) And finally, will you follow up at once? Not a week or two later?Follow up is crucial to closing deals and making more. And you must do it at once... not manana.

You'll SAY you'll do this, all of it, but who are you trying to kid?Manana has been good enough for you your entire life...

"My mother's always working, she's working very hard But every time she looks for me I'm sleeping in the yard My mother thinks I'm lazy and maybe she is right I'll go to work manana but I gotta sleep tonight."

Oh, yes, manana has been good enough for you!

'Last Dance'. An appreciation for Donna Summer, the lady who kept the worlddancing. Dead at 63. May 17, 2012.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant Author's program note. You don't just think about Donna Summer... you've got to experience her... because when you experience the lady you are liberating yourself... from all your burdens, problems, obstacles and everything else that's bothering you. You are on a dance floor. You are young. You are beautiful. You've got energy to burn... and every eye sees your every move. Who is the sorceress who makes this magic real? Her name is LaDonna Adrian Gaines... known to the world who thrilled to her sound as Donna Summer. Find her in any search engine. Start with "I Feel Love", her 1977 hit. Turn it on. Turn it up. Close your eyes... the magic is working. You are soaring.... and you are happy. I know... I am dancing with you... 65 and arthritic no longer... but agile... astonishing... alive. This is the power of our Queen... the Queen of Disco who ruled the nights under a revolving crystal ball... and made us wish the bright light of sunshine would pass... so we could dance again until Dawn. Is it any wonder a generation millions strong loved her... and why we shall miss her so? She begins. Summer was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Dorchester at the other end, the wrong end, of the MBTA Red Line from where I am writing. Her father, Andrew Gaines, was a butcher; her mother Mary a schoolteacher. Her mother later recalled Summer could sing from the time she could talk. "She literally loved to sing. She used to go through the house singing, singing. She sang for breakfast and for lunch and for supper." Like every Black diva, Summer's debut performance occurred at church. She was 10... and in the best traditions of the theatre, she was asked to replace a vocalist who, by failing to show up, allowed serendipity to change history. The priest expected what one usually gets from an untrained singer thrust forward without warning -- an utterly forgettable performance. But this is what happened as soon as the congregation heard her voice. As Summer herself remembered: "I started crying, everybody else started crying. It was quite an amazing moment in my life and at some point after I heard my voice come out I felt like God was saying to me, 'Donna, you're going to be very, very famous' and I knew from that day on that I would be famous." She was not overstating the case... quite the reverse. She was more than just "very, very famous." She became the symbol of a generation in search of ecstasy. Hers was the voice we thrilled to... the voice that gave permission, lowered inhibition, increased libido and made us realize how exciting being young could really be. And it all took place on a dance floor where we never stopped moving, never stopped flaunting, never stopped showing everyone just how hot we really were. Donna Summer was the Pied Piper... and her voice the instrument of fantasies becoming real under the diamond ball that only stopped when the new day had well and truly dawned, a day that would come alive for you only when you entered the arena of the disco... where your Queen would ignite you and gratify your every desire. But she needed that first big break... Like most recording artists, it took Summer a while to discover herself, her genius, her unique sound. In 1967, she started her trek... dropping out of Boston's Jeremiah E. Burke High School (where she was something of a troublemaker) for the Big Apple, only a 45 minute air flight but a world away from the place she knew. She always claimed her love of Boston but The Hub of the Universe was unable to provide her with the platform she needed to strut her stuff. But she didn't make it in Manhattan either, just yet. Her first break took place when she got a part in the counter cultural musical "Hair" and made the scene in -- Munich, Germany, then as now a comfortable place to do things that annoyed and outraged the folks back home. Summer liked German men; they liked her. She married one (Helmuth Sommer by whom she had a daughter, Mimi); dallied with others. She was living the life she would later make famous in her records... Then The Break. In 1975, after numerous attempts at being "discovered" and some limited success in Europe, Summer gave producer Giorgio Moroder the line that changed not just her life but the entire world... that line was "love to love you, baby". Moroder and Summer developed the concept. He put her in front of the mike where she thought of Marilyn Monroe, cooing the lyrics . She told Moroder to turn off the lights while they sat on a sofa, the resulting moans and groans her solid-gold passport towards becoming a cultural icon. Casablanca Records. Every record producer spends every waking moment looking for the infuriatingly elusive "sound" that rains gold. Moroder knew at once that Donna Summer had given him just what he wanted. He sent the tape at once to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart, in hopes of getting a prompt American release. Bogart knew his business, too; he wanted a longer, disco rendition. And he got it... and so the notorious 17-minute dance version was born... The album sold over a million copies. Parents, moralists, the good people of every community were vehement, outraged by every groan, every moan. This ensured its enormous success... and launched a Diva who legitimized every desire on the dance floor... and off. "There is a tide in the affairs of men..." Summer was no Shakespearean scholar (she had better things to do at Jeremiah Burke), but Shakespeare was ready for the crazy, glorious, money-drenched life she was about to have: "There is a tide in the affairs of men/ Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life/Is bound in shallows and in miseries/ On such a full sea are we now afloat;/ And we must take the current when it serves/ Or lose our ventures." ("Julius Caesar"). You didn't have to say that twice to this girl. She was ready, too.... And so with her mezzo-soprano vocal range she spun gold records like child's play, got 5 Grammy Awards, had three consecutive double albums reach Number One on the U.S. Billboard chart, and more, more, more. And she did it without cracking up, stooping down, embarrassing herself or her genius. With Donna Summer it was always about the music... and she gave her legions of fans what they wanted... the best dance music on earth driven by a primal beat and a come-hither voice that promised everything and delivered... more. Disco dies... Summer doesn't. Not only was she blessed with talent but more importantly she was blessed by her team... the people who made sure LaDonna Gaines became and stayed Donna Summer. They ensured that when disco died, Summer didn't. Disco became a historic moment, totally self-indulgent and rather silly. Summer changed the beat... stepped out of the tableau that made her rich and famous to stay on top and relevant in the 1980's and beyond. Only one honor eluded her. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame declined to induct her; it was churlish -- and telling. For Donna Summer was always sweet, a helper, the girl next door you could ask to baby sit. And that just didn't sit well with the folks at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame whose honorees so often personify selfishness and bad attitude. But it sets well with me and her millions of fans. She was a good girl, singing about bad girls; we were good suburban kids playing at an attitude we didn't really have but made us feel old, sophisticated, world-weary and chic. In 1999 she gave an interview to the Boston Globe where she said this, "People say to me that I was the soundtrack to their lives. It makes you feel you're a part of someone's life you don't even know. That something you've done has affected someone." Someone, Donna, like me. Which is why there will never be a "Last Dance" for your music in my house or in the houses of your mourning fans. After all, we love to love you, baby! overall system, and which he is giving away freely, is
more effective and profitable than many complete
systems costing hundreds of dollars.

can read them all and grab a copy here:

"Piet, I have downloaded the Pipkey indicator last
night. This morning between 8:00 and 10:00 am I were
making $810.00 "My best ever in two hours of trading"

Forex Trade Predator - still available at no-cost

Imagine you are looking at your Forex chart. You
just made a trade and you can see the green
horizontal dotted line where you entered the market,
the red dotted line where you place your take profit
order, and the second red dotted line where you
placed your stop loss order, sound familiar?

What if you had a way to see those three lines on your
Chart move up and down with every tick, in sync with the
market even though you are not in a trade? One press
of a button and what you see on your screen will
become actual orders.

http://www.WorkingAtHome101.com/?rd=ii1PU3VA

Some of the problems that many traders experience
are; they can be tempted to place very risky trades, they
are not using the right Risk to Reward ratio and even
trading without a Stop/Loss.

Forex Predator allows you to set predefined stop
loss and take profit levels before entering trades with
just one push of a button.
It will also keep track of
the status of your trade. It also shows you your risk
to reward ratio so you don't need to make any
calculations or take a lot of time and effort
determining your stop loss and take profit levels.

By just clicking one key on your keyboard, you will be
able to automatically enter a trade, or change stop
levels and take profit levels. You can even change the
direction of the trade and also automatically close it
as well.

There are also interviews with Piet and a panel of
experts that have spent some time with the system that
will give you further insight into both Piet and his
Forex Income Map system.

What I can tell you is that I have known Piet for
years. He is one of the smartest traders I know. He
approaches Forex with tested processes in place and
does not deviate from what has been proven to work.
It's
a simple, mechanical system that he uses and it makes
him a very good living as a full time trader.

The other thing you have probably already figured out,
if you have listened to any of the webinars, is that he
is a genuinely nice person. Easy to understand and
pleasant to listen to.

I was one of the lucky ones who got my hands on this
system a couple months ago and I am very impressed with
how easy it is to learn and more importantly, how it
produces profitable trades like clockwork.

After you register for the webinar, spend few minutes
Looking around. You'll be impressed at what you see.

Thoughts on the "war to end all wars", mustard gas, Uncle Will, and remembrance.

by  Dr. Jeffrey Lant.

Author's program note. This Memorial Day for the first time since the clock struck eleven on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the day of Armistice, there are no known World War I veterans extant. The last U.S. veteran, Frank Buckles, died in 2011 after celebrating his 110th birthday. He served as a U.S. Army ambulance driver in Europe, rising to the rank of corporal before the war ended. Then there was just one more...

Florence Green died in 2012 at age 110, just two weeks before her 111th birthday. She joined the Women's Royal Air Force in September 1918 at the age of seventeen. She went to work as a waitress in the officers' mess at RAF Marham in eastern England, and was serving there when the war ended in 1918.

With these two deaths, now they are all dead, in their millions, the men and women who fought to make the world safe for democracy, theirs the "war to end all wars" as President Woodrow Wilson earnestly asserted and solemnly pronounced to a world which, after its great sacrifices, wanted so very desperately to believe him, no one more so than William Edward Marshall, my Great Uncle Will.

How an Archduke changed the life of a gridiron hero, the most handsome man in Henderson County.

"The Great War", as its survivors dubbed it, began when a zealous young Slav nationalist named Gavrilo Princip shot the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and his morganatic wife Countess Chotek at point blank range . They both died at once... while Austrian authorities proceeded to break Princip's body like so many pretzels. Thus did Princip, just 20, become the first man of millions who yearned for home and peace, finding premature death instead. And so he died starting the invidious process that killed tit... which then had to kill tat... who outraged, had to kill tit yet again.

Why did he plan to murder, to assassinate The Heir? For only the highest and best reasons you may be sure... reasons for which over 60,000,000 people around the world died, every day that trail of blood and mayhem emanating from the slumped body of His Royal and Imperial Highness grew broader and broader still. His dead eyes asked a single question, the question hitherto unquestioning millions would ask in their turn "Why"? The answer is to be found in part in William Edward Marshall, citizen of Stronghurst, Illinois, 21st state of the Great Republic.

To understand World War I you must understand how Will Marshall, as everyone always called  him, gave up everything he knew and valued to go fight on behalf of faraway people he didn't know and would never meet, knowingly risking life and limb, remember -- for total strangers.

About Will Marshall.

William Edward Marshall achieved the highest rank his country could confer the moment of his birth, for then, the very instant he was born he was Citizen of the Great Republic, a title, style and dignity unknown in most of Europe whose opulent princes had subjects, not citizens. Here Will Marshal, for all that he was not a prince or count, was better off -- and knew it. Thus his belief in the Great Republic, its whys and wherefores, came as easily as breathing. He was a free man in a free country, a man whose right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness was assured by the Constitution of the United States. These rights came from his relationship to God, not because of some calculated gesture of a Machiavellian prince who might later rescind what he rued to give. William Edward Marshall's rights were sacrosanct for him.... and every other Citizen. This was America in 1890 the year Will Marshall was born, the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Football hero, farmer, respected man of peace.

Will Marshall was called without irony the handsomest man in Henderson County. "That and two bits will buy you pie and coffee," even his deflating father said. Will didn't mind the raillery; after all, tall, well made, fleet of foot and master strategist he was that most American of local heroes... from whose agile moves came a lifetime's respect from those who would tear the goal posts down after they had seen Will Marshall run past them -- again. Such feats are cherished everywhere in America, but nowhere more than in the tiny hamlet of Stronghurst, Illinois; population still under 1000 souls in 1914... everyone of them knew what a good man Will Marshall was... how hard-working, how public spirited, how well he must stand with his God. And so things might have continued but for the murderous meeting between an archduke on a sunny July day and a zealot determined to exterminate him.

Will Marshall goes to war, to France, to his destiny.

Will Marshall was not a warrior, not a man of marshal attitudes, uniforms, poses and gestures. Farmers, tillers of the land, bringing forth its bounty by their own incessant labor, seldom are. They know how difficult it is to create life, to spend any of their limited time on this planet destroying it. Will Marshall abhorred war, yet went to war, the greatest and most destructive war ever, because the Great Republic and its affairs needed him... and that was that.

"The Yanks are coming."

Thus, Will Marshall became part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and in due course found himself one of over one million citizen-soldiers stationed in France, over half of whom were at the front lines, including him. There as the increasingly desperate German imperial forces grew more desperate yet, considering, doing every single thing they could do to snatch victory from increasingly certain defeat, Will Marshall met his fate, in a cloud of poison gas.

Mustard gas.

Contrary to popular belief, gas as a weapon was first introduced by the French army. However it was the Germans with their customary organizational genius and chemical skills who perfected the process. For the defence and glory of the Fatherland anything, even the most horrid thing, was contemplated, considered and ultimately used. Some apologist somewhere would no doubt advance a comfortable rationale...

And so one ordinary day an ordinary German solider lobbed the mustard gas that sent William Edward Marshall, citizen, descendant of the great Chief Justice who helped shape the new nation, one of nature's gentlemen, to his knees, brought low by the toxic beauty of gas; stealthy, silent, serene.

But there, you see, is the rub. For gas is one of the cruelest weapons ever created. During the actual mustard gas attack its manifestations may not be seen, will not be seen for hours, even days. Then... the gas you inhaled, perhaps without knowing it, became the pernicious agent of your end... the gas rules you and decides whether you live or die, what manifestations and disabilities may be yours and torment you for years, for life.

Thus, starting from the day he was gassed until the day he died, Uncle Will lived a life where his sight degenerated . Remedies were tried. Doctors consulted. Prayers by one and all given for his recovery, for he was a popular man. All to no avail. The effects of that gas cost him at once one eye. The second deteriorated year by year until in 1934 he could see nothing at all.  Light, for him, had ceased to exist.

Uncle Will and Me.

When I was growing up in the 'fifties, my family visited Stronghurst every so often. We never failed to visit Uncle Will and his charming wife Alma. My father made sure we behaved properly. He was especially keen on the handshake, "Firm, NOT limp!" And how to walk across the parlor properly, so Uncle Will knew how many steps you took. In this way he calculated how tall you were and how much you'd grown since the last visit.

The room was quiet, sound muted, light filtered. Uncle Will sat in a great, sturdy chair, its size necessary to contain the football player of old. I looked closely at his face; this was the face of a man of resignation and calm acceptance. He remained handsome, even noble right until the end.

He never complained. Never said a word about that day so long ago. Never was anything but gentle, polite, good humored and glad to see you. He had fought his war, done his bit, paid the terrible price and could look the world in the eye, his pride deep, profound, abiding.  The Great Republic has besought his help. He had given in full measure, and for him it was "Over, over there", not a bitter reality revisited daily.

Now not only Uncle Will but every veteran of the Great War is gone. Now they no longer die by thousands each day... but, far worse, are forgotten in their thousands each day; men and women whose lives were utterly and completely committed to us, now not even a moment's thought by us. Yet we are all the children of their unequalled gifts and should always be glad and glad to say so.  They ask so little now, but we begrudge them even that, satisfied to take, satisfied to give them nothing, not even heartfelt recognition of our eternal debt.

May God forgive us.

Author's closing note. Like so many of his buddies, Uncle Will loved "Over There", a jaunty tune written by George M. Cohan in 1917.. Find it in any search engine. Turn up the sound and remember.

On the divinity that doth hedge a king -- and all his possessions. A trip to Dorotheum and the Kaiserhaus sale, a place and an event you never knew existed... and will hereafter never miss.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. I am calm again... but I know, none better, that I shall again be overcome by a kind of fever, a fever that causes me to lose interest in the usual activities of life and focus instead on the lives of certain folks, usually long dead, who yet from the very grave have more allure and glamor about them than all our own babbling leaders. But then these leaders have nary a princely attribute, much less artifact with which to captivate us and willingly enthrall.

Even their autographs, signed and dated on grim official photographs, often have no value whatsoever (beyond the ego massage it gives the signer), for such leaders are quotidian and our interest in them and their artifacts wanes with their power. No one, and certainly not a brilliant royalist like Shakespeare, will ever lose sleep or commit pocketbook to gain a slice of their wedding cake or a lock of hair in a golden locket with a pose at once regal and wistful. Mere prime ministers much less ministers of transport have no such magic.

But even the youngest prince or princess of the most transient royal dynasty does most surely have it... and what they have we want. Hence the twice annual imperial sales in Vienna, the great city of the Habsburgs and their imperium, every stone of which recalls them still, and affectionately. Let me be your host and guide. And for the music to accompany us, it must be "Der Kaiserwalzer" Opus 437 "Emperor Waltz" by Johann Stauss II composed in 1889. Its history is telling...

Emperor Franz Josef, Europe's longest reigning monarch (1848-1916) originally conceived this waltz as a most elegant imperial compliment, in this case to his ally the Emperor William II of Germany, to be delivered in the form of a toast. And so this most Austrian of waltzes was presented in Berlin to the man who, more than anyone, brought down the entire structure of European royalty and lived to rue the day... but not yet. For now, go to any search engine and find this brilliant paean to an emperor, a king of kings, and to an era marked forever by his cypher. Thrill to the sweeping crescendo with which it opens... then be prepared to waltz, just as the emperor himself would be doing if he were in attendance with his gentlemen (as he often was). For his Imperial and Apostolic Majesty loved to dance with a beautiful woman... and forget his troubles, just like you. It was the secret of why the empire loved him, despite the many troubles "serious but not important".

They knew, every single subject, he was one of them, Viennese to his fingertips, and, like the whole imperial structure, in his waning days. This cast a bittersweet pall over Vienna and the House of Habsburg, so much so that when dancing one would often find a tear in one's eye... for such happy, golden days could not last forever, and didn't. Thus one wanted a souvenir of this time... proof that one was present and empathized. They looked to Dorotheum for assistance. Then as now Dorotheum specialized in providing such valued mementoes, grand, opulent, intimate, human, joyful, even tragic, presented to you lot by entrancing lot, lavishly photographed to make them irresistible to --- you.

Dorotheum.

The first thing you need to know about Dorotheum, Vienna's premier auctioneers (founded in 1707), is its name. It is not "the Dorotheum"; it is simply "Dorotheum," and to add the article drives purists (like me) wild; it is the same with RMS Titanic; there is no article in front of the name of the doomed vessel, never was, never will be... and so it is with Dorotheum. Thus we shall start as we mean to get on: with total accuracy and an eye for detail. These traits are of the essence in succeeding at Dorotheum and its highly specialized world. The more you epitomize them, the more successful your sojourn at Dorotheum, and I assure you if you are a connoisseur at any level of expertise, you will want such success here.

Dorotheum online and off.

These days Dorotheum presents its offerings in both the traditional paper catalogs and also online. Personally I find both information sources useful. Paper catalogs, of course, can be taken everywhere; one needs no plug. But online imagery, blowing up the image to better grasp its particulars -- and its particular problems -- is invaluable, not least because you can examine each part of the lot slowly, carefully, thoroughly as you should.

Hardly a day goes by when I fail to consult even a smidgeon of the voluminous resources available at Dorotheum. If I believed in being overwhelmed, even I should admit to a degree of awe in the detail provided. Thus, one must carefully select the areas of one's interest, since concentration and focus are absolutely required. For me this meant the twice a year sales of artifacts from what they call in Vienna Kaiserhaus, Haus Habsburg, the imperial family. I have just emerged from the most recent, dazed, bruised, challenged... and, yes, even victorious. It was despairing, it was exhilarating, it was fun, it was expensive; it was a grand auction of grand artifacts... and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Preparation.

Because I am a serious and a frequent buyer and totally committed collector, I approach the catalogs with serious intent. I am not merely looking; I am looking to buy, to augment my already sizable collection. Moreover, because my Harvard Ph.D. is in History, specifically Modern European History, I expect to know something about what is being presented... but with the necessity to do more refined research and other homework to provide me with the edge I need for maximum success at absolutely the lowest price. I have money, but not to burn. Thus shrewdness must be acquired and keenly used. And I am assiduous in both.

18 Objects.

For the last imperial sale, I marked 18 items which, upon preliminary view, would fit nicely into my Cambridge collection, a place where space (or the lack of it) is a pressing problem. I asked for condition reports on each; talked to their experts twice, asked my own London-based conservators for their professional opinions on the relevant items... and did my own homework, no slacking allowed. In due course, just the day before the event, I at last felt ready.. which also meant being prepared for serendipity, that is being ready for what one cannot predict... taking advantage of the unexpected which is a key factor in one's success.

Every monarchist in Europe present, every monarchist in the world on the telephone.

I do my bidding by phone, by myself not with an agent. I prefer to control my destiny... and keep to my preassigned limits. And since it is my limited resources I'm spending... I usually do, but only "usually". Very quickly I came to understand, by close questioning of the charming lady who transmitted my bids to the auctioneer that there would be no bargains today... and so the imperial china of the Empress Maria Anna slipped away along with paintings, silver, autographs of a half dozen archdukes, and a lovely seascape I thought sure I'd get... all gone. Monarchists and aficionados of the Habsburgs had waited patiently for this day... and were not to be denied. And so a long day went slowly, painfully indeed.... until... that imp serendipity, always present in an auction, never predictable, sometimes for you, sometimes against. Now, for a single instant, my ally.

"Enormous changes at the last minute."

This is Grace Paley's famous line. I love it and frequently see the world through this aperture. It certainly applied now because as the number of lots remaining fast dwindled, the substantial crowd ready for dinner dissipated and started home from the magnificent palace where these auctions are held. Few people remained; fewer lots. And thus when the signed photograph of German Emperor Frederick III came up the auctioneer offered a low bid... half the low estimate. I bit. And, in a minute, he gaveled the item to a close -- for me! A pip of an item (for autographs of this Emperor are rare; he only reigned for 99 days), for a pip of a price, virtually a gift.

"Dr. Lant," my representative said clapping her hands in glee, "You got the only bargain of the auction!" And I believe I did. "I am so happy for you!" Her sincerity and joy for me were palpable... and pure Viennese, pure Dorotheum.

I was so happy that I quickly acquired a fine portrait of English King Edward VII by Heinrich von Angeli (1840-1925). Perhaps I overpaid just a bit, but I wanted it and still have funds to fight another day.

And believe me, at these imperial sales I will.

Getting The Most Out Of Something FREE

Hi Here’s how you can get the most out of a program called Free Monthly Websites. Free Monthly Websites, in my opinion is one of those programs you either know what to do with or you don’t. I will now show you how you can get the most of it and why Free Monthly Websites is such great tool which can earn you an extra income stream to your business for a long time to come.

The Three main categories we need to concentrate on here are: 1, Selling eBooks 2, Writing articles 3, Affiliate promotions When you first login and download your website follow the tutorials which is very easy to do and eventually get your website onto your webspace. You are presented with a very nice well designed Adsense website. What can you do with this free website? Well to be honest the free website has duplicate content so you can rule out getting to the top of the search engine rankings, the premier websites are a different kettle of fish all together but I will get to those in a moment.
Take option 1 above ‘Selling eBooks’ if you sell eBooks especially PLR (private Label Content) conversions, you will find Free Monthly Websites have a rather large verity of websites that correspond with a lot of the PLR out there (if you are a premier member you get a bonus PLR eBook). All you need to do is upload your eBook to a convenient location on your webspace and place a few corresponding links inside your PLR eBook for example: I have a weight loss eBook and a small paragraph saying “there are 100’s ways to lose weight which can be found in various forms from Books to television to fitness programs bla bla bla” you could not take this small paragraph and insert your Free Monthly Websites website link in a prime location for instance “there are 100’s ways to lose weight which can be found in various forms from Books to television to fitness programs the best resource I found is at www.yourfreemonthlywebsites.com/fitness_website” Now imagine you done this to all your eBooks! Simply take a little time upload your Free Monthly Websites website to your webspace then reopen your PLR eBooks and insert the relevant hyperlink which corresponds to your website and there you have it. For about 2 hours work you have created an income stream for life. Now imagine you have 50 PLR eBooks doing the rounds on eBay or your blog. Your AdSense revenue is going to creep up and up until you are earning a very respectable income. It’s a simple case of wash rinse repeat. Option number 2 is even easier. I know most of you will at some point, or do write articles and submit them to relevant article directories. Well why not try writing an article about one of the subjects related to Free Monthly Websites? Upload your website to a location on your webspace, place the link in your article and there you have it, submit to article directories like:
 http://www.articledashboard.com/ http://www.articlebasement.com/ http://ezinearticles.com/ http://www.goarticles.com/
And another income stream will start. The third option is a little different. Using your Free Monthly Websites affiliate link to promote the website and earn a potential 98.50 per referral. You can place your link in the websites provided for you and in the eBooks you sell and articles you write this can generate a missive earnings income of 98.50. So with your website up on your webspace and your eBook on eBay and your articles in the article directories, you will be well on your way to earning a nice income from a free resource. I mentioned earlier your Premier Members website. These are a fantastic resource and are worth every penny for the simple fact you receive a private label eBook and 20 articles with every Premier Membership website every month. Not only can you use the eBooks and articles in the ways I have explained, you can key word optimize your website for the search engines, change the content and make your sites as original as you like. In other words you have full edit rights. So if you imagine directing a visitor to your Premier Website via an eBook or article, they will find a fully edited site with offers and affiliate links promotions, and even an Aweber signup box (which you can integrate with a little HTML knowledge) which in turn will create more revenue and more subscribers for you. My recommendations are if you have a few hours to spare get started with this and you will soon see a Google AdSense income. If you use the Premier Websites, you can place affiliate banners, Clickbank affiliate links and Aweber signup box on your site as well as edit all your own content via an easy edit control panel.. If you are going to move into this business, I recommend you take the Full Premier Websites Access! Here's a link for you: Free Monthly Website Thank you for reading I hope you enjoyed my review. Facebook - A New Marketing Avenue

Facebook and Social Media - The Next Marketing Opportunity

Marketing as an activity is all about reaching the right customers with the right products, and the result sought is delighted customers who are more than willing to open their purses wide enough to boost your revenues. For many years, marketers stalked their target customers through various means and by trying to get their message across to spread awareness about their wares.

Traditional Means of Communication

Traditionally, marketing communications were conducted via print, broadcast and such traditional media through disruptive advertising, where advertisements appear in between the content of interest for the customer.

Traditional media does give a large reach to a marketer with its programming of mass appeal. However, the wastage is equally high, since a large portion of the audience would belong to a different segment than the one that is to be targeted by the marketer.

Enter Social Media and the Internet

The revolution stirred by the internet as a medium took place because of the fact that it is highly personalized and provides more content on-demand than any other available medium. Social sites proliferated far and wide in their usage for a few simple reasons:

The power to create and distribute content is equally available to every user, irrespective of him/her being a customer or a marketer. In the earlier forms of media, that power rested with the editorial staff of the channel or the advertiser, but hardly ever with the user.
The medium is completely personalized, and a user can create or join groups and further create content based on what he/she likes.
Opinions are free and fair. This is one reason why social media is of utmost concern to marketers, since buying decisions are no more influenced as much by advertisements. The traditional word-of-mouth marketing approach has grown leaps and bounds on social networks.

Facebook – At the Center of Social Media

With 500 million (and growing) unique users worldwide, Facebook is the number one social networking site in terms of activity and subscriptions. What started as a garage initiative by Mark Zuckerberg has now become the biggest phenomenon on the internet.

A user interface that allows for quick communication and the ability to create fan pages and groups at the click of a mouse button are what make Facebook extremely popular. Another important reason for its immense popularity is the wide variety of social applications that have been developed and made available within the Facebook environment.

These applications can allow users and friends to do joint activities like playing games that run endlessly, sharing photos, videos, and web links, and many more.

How does this help a marketer?

Traditionally, media plans were drawn to include television channels, publications, or any other media that can grab maximum eyeballs and effectively reach a selected target audience. The science of segmentation and targeting has become only more accurate in the case of social media.

Facebook provides a wide variety of avenues to communicate with the audience, which opens up an entirely different world of possibilities to have a fruitful dialogue with customers. Some of these methods used popularly by marketers are:

Advertising: The first opportunity, which is the most obvious one, is advertising on Facebook. The difference, however, is the fact that you can create your own advertisement in a matter of minutes and also specify the details of your target group in terms of demographics and types of discussions where you want your advertisement to appear.
Fan Pages: Facebook allows every brand, as well as individual users, to create fan pages for their favorite celebrities and their own homegrown businesses. Large brands have also created their official pages on Facebook that have a huge, immediate fan following around the world. The fan page has immense utility to convey first hand information about the brand and also to collect immediate and frank feedback from your customers.
Branded applications: One of the most effective ways to engage a user toward your brand is by creating an application; this could be a game or a contest, with your branding coming across subtly through it.

What makes Facebook even more exciting is the way it allows you to target your communication sharply just to the customer segment you want to attract. It also provides analytics and page insights that give good feedback and measurement on the activity done.

The options provided by Facebook can be creatively explored and used judiciously for bringing about maximum benefits to any brand.

However, while doing all this, you need to be aware of the fact that customers have an equal say and have the ability to respond immediately to any of your actions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. Availing the service of a social media consultant to work out a social media strategy may be required so that your efforts will not be in vain.

11 Tips On Allergies And Home Remedies

Many millions of people suffer from allergies. There are all types of allergies, everything from dust and pollen, to animal dander, to certain types of foods. The most common symptoms of an allergy is a runny nose, watery itchy eyes, sneezing, pressure, headaches, and nausea. The good news is there are many very effective allergies home remedies that you can use that will eliminate, or at least diminish, your reliance on expensive and side effect heavy prescription and over the counter drugs and may help you get rid of the allergies altogether. Here are some things that you can try: 1. Taking Vitamin E is believed to help increase your body's ability to fight off allergens. Many people have gotten relief from their allergies by taking a daily dose of Vitamin E. 2. Many people claim that adding a few drops of castor oil to a half cup of juice can help alleviate your allergy. You can also add the castor oil to a glass of water if you prefer. 3. Use the allergy relief furnace filters in your furnace and make sure to replace them as often as the manufacturer recommends. 4. Use a bleach water solution in any areas of your home that tend to get damp. This can help eliminate the growth of mold which is a prime cause of allergies. 5. Keep your pets bathed and brushed. If you can't do it yourself take them to a groomer. 6. Try to avoid any house cleaning chores that tend to stir up a lot of dust. If possible get someone else to vacuum, dust, or sweep. 7. If you can, try to replace your carpets with wood or tile flooring and just a few area rugs. Carpets are like magnets and they can really hold on to a lot of dust and dander. 8. Buy an air purifier and make sure to replace the filters frequently. 9. Keep your pets out of your sleeping area. This is the one area of your house that it's particularly important to be an allergy free zone. You need to be fully rested and if you're up sneezing all night long you can't get the sleep you need. 10. Make sure to frequently wash all of your bedding in hot water. This is another place that dust mites and dander can really build up fast, and since this is also where you sleep it's very important to keep it as free of dust as possible. 11. When cutting the grass you should consider wearing a mask to keep the dust from blowing into your face. This may also help whenever you are out working in the yard if you are prone to seasonal allergies. Whether you are looking for something to relieve your allergy symptoms or eliminate your allergies altogether, these allergies home remedies can provide you with some much needed relief. Use one, or all, of the tips on this list and keep looking until you find the combination that works best for you. You do have options and don't have to just rely on store bought allergy products. Can Your Business Survive

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." But when you're starting your own business, there's no guarantee that your "mousetrap" is going to survive, especially in today's fast-paced business world. Nearly half of all small businesses fail within the first two years of operation. The number one reason for business failure is inadequate planning. The second reason is under-capitalization. So before you mortgage your house, or go into debt financing your business, you need to know if your business is going to do more than survive -- you want to know if it's good enough to thrive! Here are three things successful businesses that have stayed in business for five years or longer have in common: 1. The idea. A successful business start-up always starts with an idea. Something that makes your business stand out from all the rest. So how do you know if you've got a good idea? You've probably got a good idea if you can answer yes to any of the following questions: Does your idea provide the solution to a significant problem for your target market? Does it satisfy a need or want? Does it create an opportunity? The most successful businesses either fix problems (either real or perceived), or they increase your customer's pleasure. They create a repeat need for a product or service among the target market. 2. The market. Your chances of survival are better if you can answer the following questions with a yes: Is there already a market for your product or service? (It's much easier to fill a need than trying to create an entirely new market.) Can your target market afford to buy your products or services? (If they can't afford it, it doesn't matter how great it is, you won't sell any!) Will your target market perceive your product or service as valuable? (If they want it, but don't think it's worth what you're selling it for, you won't make any sales.) 3. Your ability. Do you have the people, the resources and the knowledge to be able to consistently provide your products or services to your target market? Can you maintain a competitive advantage? Do you have enough manpower? Can you purchase the supplies and materials you need over the long run? Your first step always is to create a solid business plan. Your business plan is more than an essay on "Why I deserve to get funding for my idea" however. Don't spend all the time creating a business plan and then toss it in the bottom drawer of your desk. Your business plan should be a living, breathing roadmap that helps you make sure you're on course and reaching the goals that you set for your business. The second step to business survival is getting enough financing. Although the term "bootstrap entrepreneur" describes most small business owners, having enough capital to be able to keep your business afloat is vital to your survival. When you're creating your financial analysis of your business, make sure you're being realistic about costs and expenditures, so that you give yourself the cushion you need to succeed. If finding financing is a problem, either because you don't have enough credit or equity, or there are other problems, take the time to look into the resources that are available in your community. There are a wide variety of grants and loans (including microloans) for entrepreneurs, if you know where to look. Some great resources will be: -The Small Business Administration -Local Small Business Development Centers -Women's Organizations -Local University or Community College -Chamber of Commerce -SCORE (The Association for Retired Executives) -Nonprofit organizations that work on economic development in your area Use other successful business models as a guide. When you're getting started, look around. What businesses are successful? Why? What is it they're doing that is working? What attributes do you admire, and why? You stand a better chance of succeeding if you're modeling someone who is already successful. Find a mentor. Most entrepreneurs have great skills and abilities, but no one does everything well. You probably already know what your strengths and weaknesses are. (If not, there are many resources and tools that can help you figure it out!) Rather than ignoring your weaknesses, find a mentor who can help you either build your skills in your weaker areas, or offer advice for getting what you need. If you take the time to plan to succeed, you could be creating a legacy that will be enjoyed by future generations, and that other entrepreneurs will look at as a model for building their own businesses. Why Women Love Jewelry

Why Women Love Jewelry

You could be the subject of ridicule if you go out and ask – Why women love jewelry? It is almost as if you were to ask – Why do human beings need food? Over the years, jewelry has gone on to play a significant part in a woman’s dressing regime. While some years back, jewelry was considered as a mere additive to the entire context of dressing, nowadays, it is considered to be an integrated component of style and fashion for a woman.

A survey done by a leading lifestyle magazine reported that out of 100 women, 95 of them would spend a lot of their time shopping for jewelry and then move on to other accessories. Need we say more on why jewelry often finds itself high in the list of a woman’s shopping list!

Some years back gold necklaces, gold pendants and gold earrings were predominant. All of that has already seen a big change. Gold was quickly replaced by diamonds, which fervently got the nickname of being a woman’s best friend. A lot of that is still changing. With the introduction of inspirational charms and sterling silver charms by a lot of jewelry stores, people are increasingly looking forward to these options.

And while, jewelry was considered an expensive commodity some years back, with these inspirational charms and budget options, the buyer of today have options where they get to spend less on buying their necklace or pendants. Not much has changed in terms of expectations of a woman when they go out buying a piece of jewelry. If anything, they have become more demanding in terms of their needs of style and fashion.

Keeping this in mind, new age jewelry are increasingly becoming a blend of fashion and comfort. A lot of the heavy metal and the glaze are now being replaced by sterling silver charms, which are superbly comfortable for the eyes, and on the body of the beholder too. Imagine you wearing a necklace around your neck that has the letters “L O V E” inscribed inside a small pendant attached to the necklace. Go a step ahead and get the name of your beau on this necklace, and if nothing, you are promised all life loyalty for sure!

It is no hidden secret that women used to love jewelry. They love it even more today because it is no longer considered to be something that can only be worn on occasions. Go to a party today and you will find women wearing jewelry often stand out from the others. And this does not mean women need to carry 12 ounces of gold with them when they attend such parties.

jewelry has become an integral portion of every woman’s dressing sense today. Not only does it add to the beauty of a woman, which it always used to do, but keeping in mind the style conscious woman of today, light jewelry like the inspirational charms and sterling silver charms blend beautifully well with today’s demands.

Harvard and MIT to offer free online classes. What it means for you, what it means for the world, what it means for education.

Author's program note. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) was the first of the mega rich American tycoons. He made his money in transportation... first with boats ferrying freight and passengers between Staten Island and Manhattan, then by combining America's 13 railroad systems into the massive New York Central railroad, with which he controlled America's crucial and lucrative transportation network.

How did he do it? In part by never being the first person to commit his resources to the establishment and growth of a new business. No, indeed. Instead he watched what other entrepreneurs were doing...  until he figured out where they were right and, as important, where they were making mistakes and were vulnerable. With such facts firmly in hand, he developed a plan that simultaneously destroyed their business... and established him as the lead player in the enterprises he wished to dominate. It was brilliant and it made him very rich indeed.

The same thing is happening right now, right here in Cambridge where on May 2, 2012, the two greatest educational institutions on earth gave public notice that they plan not only to go online with educational classes, but intend to be the dominant players.

"Urbi et Orbi".

Since 1626 when the Basilica was completed, the pontiffs of the Roman Catholic Church have raised their gloved hands on the balcony of St. Peter's to address "Urbi et Orbi", the people of Rome and the people of the world. This appearance was designed to impress and it did.  One man, his important message, the attention of the world, and the change that man desired and mandated. Thus, the Bishop of Rome did his business -- and thus he does it to this day.

And so do Harvard and MIT aim to do their business and change the world "Cantabridgia et Urbi", to the people of Cambridge and to the people of the world... a development of literally universal significance.

Scrutinizing the field, determined to better what is available, putting their money where their mouth is.

Since the inception of the Internet, farseeing people have rightly said there would be classes offered to the world... but how and by whom? The devil, as is entirely usual in such matters, was in the details. And so a series of entrepreneurs stepped forward and offered their version of online education, in the hope that theirs would be the version that stuck, thus

* The Minerva Project. a for-profit university with all course material available online.

* Udacity. A startup born from online engineering courses at Stanford University.

* Coursera. A center for online courses from Stanford, Princeton, Michigan and Penn.

Up until the joint announcement of Harvard and MIT these organizations had a shot at success. But the minute Harvard President Drew Faust and MIT President Susan Hockfield had their say, you could almost feel the palpable dismay of the other online course innovators. Their likelihood of success had just evaporated.

Of course these other innovators put the best possible face on the matter. Coursera's founders, Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, said they were glad to see other universities engage in online education; ( though they meant any universities other than Harvard and MIT).

They made a point of emphasizing that those to be offered by edX, the official name of the Harvard-MIT collaboration, would not be nearly as numerous as those they were offering. THEY would offer 40 classes this fall. So there! They made their case as best they could... but no one treated their spin with any seriousness...

... such is the potent magic of Harvard linked now to the technical genius of MIT. Really, who could successfully compete against such a combine? Commodore Vanderbilt knew the answer to that: no one, absolutely no one!

Why the Harvard-MIT Partnership will work.

These are the reasons edX, which will operate as an independent, nonprofit entity, will wallop the field:

1) Brand name. Harvard is the preeminent university in the world, and the world (which craves the reliability and reassurance of brand names) knows Harvard. While MIT may not be as generally well known, its reputation amongst the technically agile is unsurpassed. Quite simply, this team rocks.

2) Money. Harvard and MIT each plunked down $30 million to finance this enterprise. They know it takes money to make money, and by committing a significant sum, they announced this was a major project and would get major attention and and major financing.

3) Talent. The best people in the world want to be associated with these titans of learning. Harvard enhances their resumes; they burnish Harvard's already majestic community of scholars and MIT's technocrats.  Now an expert in Tokyo or Oslo can teach for edX and never come to Cambridge. Think what this means! Now every scholar and technical expert on earth glimpses their connection and future with the most  significant global instructional effort ever. And as a result they will flock to be a part of something so timely, significant, and influential.

4) Students. Recruitment for students will feature classes restricted to a million auditors. These classes will fill in minutes, and have waiting lists. Only Harvard and MIT can contemplate such reality. People in every country on earth will thrill to such an education, offered by such institutions, theirs now for the first time and joyously.

As President Hockfield said, "You can choose to view this era as one of threatening change and unsettling volatility, or you can see it as a moment charged with the most exciting possibilities presented to educators in our lifetime."

"Eroica".

There are, to be sure, many matters yet to be arranged. Of course there are; the world is being summoned here for advancement and sweeping change. How could there not be dozens of important elements not yet resolved, not the least being how to recognize student participation and achievement without watering down the degrees offered by each institution. You can be assured the Old Guard will scrutinize this matter with the utmost care. But these details in due course will be solved leaving us to behold and benefit from this cosmic enterprise sure to advance our species.

For this moment, we need great Beethoven and his 3rd Symphony, "Eroica" (1805) It celebrates grand ideas, great visions, thrilling vistas, and the achievement of our highest and most challenging inspirations, aspirations and objectives. For this moment only Beethoven will do. Go now to any search engine and find this soaring sound and remember you were here when mankind made this stupendous leap into a future suddenly better.

Can Credit Repair Programs Help

Credit repair programs can be inexpensive or they can cost $1000 or more.  Much of the cost difference depends on which program you choose and how much debt you have. If you're very far behind, a program could cost a couple thousand dollars. Yet some credit repair programs can cost very little, especially those used by specific creditors.

When you're trying to decide if you should look into a program of credit repair, consider how hard it will be for you to get out of debt. A credit repair program may be one that just fixes inaccuracies on your credit report, or it could be one that helps you with a system of repayment.

Some credit repair programs are designed for people who are struggling under crushing debt. These people may need someone to negotiate with their creditors for lower balances, lower interest or more.

Some programs can arrange for you to pay only a little more than half of what you owe. Other programs help settle your debts for less and may also negotiate for no more interest on what you owe. Some programs may combine both smaller balances and no or low interest, which can help you get your debts paid off.

If you really can't make your payments on time or feel that you're slipping under, a program could work for you. If you can keep up with your payments and keep paying the balances down, then that's your best option. Any other options like credit counseling or credit repair programs do leave dings on your credit.

That's because credit counseling programs may require the cards to be cancelled. Several cancelled cards with outstanding balances can hurt your credit score. And arranging smaller balances through programs for credit repair can hurt your credit because the charge-off amount will show.

Credit repair programs can help you in the long run, however. It's better to have a charge-off than months of late payments and missed payments. Also, if you're unable to make your payments on time, your amount of available credit is probably shrinking as the late fees add up.

When your credit cards reach their limit and you have less and less credit available, your credit score will suffer. When you have debt that equals too much of your available credit, it's known as a bad debt/credit ratio.  It can even make the interest rates on cards you do pay on time go up.

If you have a lot of cards that are cancelled at once, it leaves you with a lot of debt and no available credit. This is why credit counseling is not always a good option for your credit score.

You should do everything you can to resolve your credit problems on your own. But if you can't, it's better to get help than to keep missing payments or making them late. This will hurt you more than anything in the long wrong.

Each late payment is another month your credit score can't start to improve. Look into credit repair programs before you do more damage.

Oh me, oh my! My writer's well has sure run dry. Now what? Suggestions foroutsmarting writer's block.

by  Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. Sooner or later EVERY writer will face the ordeal of the blank page and come up with -- nothing! At such a moment, you may well fall victim to malaise, running the spectrum from anxious to suicidal. The longer the seizure lasts, the worst these reactions will be, until one completely miserable day you reckon you can never write another word again... and this can bring on not only sadness but a kind of death from which, like the real thing, there is no escape.

To help you through this situation when it inevitably occurs, I am going to pack this article with one practical suggestion after another. You may not need them now; may not need them for a decade. But keep this article readily at hand for when you do.

First suggestion. Use a special song to raise your mood and get you moving.

Have a song easily available that makes you want to surge. I have a list of favorites, all selected for their proven ability to lift my spirits and put me in the mood to give something to humanity, something like the project I'm currently writing. "Maniac" from the 2001 film "Flashdance" featuring Michael Sembello always works. I indulge myself, acting kid crazy as everything conduces to get you.... your brain.... and your prose flowing again. You'll find this song in any search engine... turn it on, let yourself go, until you feel the unstoppable energy that this kind of insistent music delivers.

Second suggestion. The minute you get nervous, frustrated, flustered, hot under the collar, STOP and STOP at once.

The worst thing you can do is force yourself to write. Not only will the quality of what you're writing be tainted, but you'll hurt yourself and begin to think the writing game is not worth the candle, the worst possible conclusion.

This particular advice can be very difficult to follow. After all, you've been productive before and aim to be productive again just as soon as possible. Surely, if you force yourself to write you can push the blockage to one side and flow, right? Instead, sit down at your writing desk, write as much as you can that flows naturally. Stop when the flow ceases...

... even if you've only managed to write a single word. Pushing yourself during a block never works positively and can easily affect your self-esteem and self-confidence when the push doesn't work.

Third Suggestion. Keep your regular writing hours, even if you cannot write your name on the page just now.

Good habits are the key to good, constant, always flowing writing. Thus, it is important during draught days to do the precise things you did during the fat days. What you produce may not be substantial -- yet. But even if you find yourself in the position of Oscar Wilde ("in the morning I put in a comma; in the afternoon I took it out again.") that won't matter. Why? Because the most productive writers are like Pavlov's dogs... trained to write whilst in your sanctified writer's place.

Fourth Suggestion. Still stalled? Do this!

First of all, notice I use the word "stalled" to describe your current unproductive situation. It is a word that implies you were moving and the problem being solved you will regain your accustomed outcome... and peace of mind.

Thus, when stalled do this... Take a walk around the park (if you're lucky enough like me to have one right out the front door, so much the better). Find yourself a shaded bench where the view is congenial. Take out the pad and paper every writer must always carry; select an object and -- describe it, fully, completely, without leaving anything out of your description... writing not only factually but with as much lyric beauty as you can draw from the "dry" well at the moment.

The simple task of describing the flower bed at your feet starts the productive juices flowing... even if you're able, just now, to write only a single word (tree) with just one adjective (green). The thousand mile journey starts with the single step; yours starts with a single word... and any word will do.

Fifth Suggestion. Copy a page of another's prose... to get you moving.

Nothing happening so far to get your stalled skills working productively again? No worries! Take a passage from a favorite book or article, open a file and enter this text. As you do, engaging brain and nimble fingers, you're performing a function all prose writers regularly do, in my case almost daily, that is entering reference material.

When you've finished so entering a block of text, go on and comment on what you've entered. What was good about the passage entered, what was bad, what inspired, what underwhelmed? In just a minute or two, you're writing... perhaps not yet up to your usual level. But what of that? Your creative faculties are working; your imagination is working, your fingers are working... and soon the flow of new ideas, new insights, new observations and new perceptions will be working, perhaps even better than before.

Sixth Suggestion. Read from your own prose.

Far too many writers fail to read their prose aloud. This is bad for several reasons, including to make sure all sentences are balanced, harmonious, with every word the right word. Merely reading your prose cannot deliver the optimum result; reading aloud can.

Thus, pick up the first page of anything you've written, not necessarily lately either. When you've finished reciting this page, sit down at your computer and write a second page to accompany what you've already written and read. Again, by positively positioning yourself and doing your usual tasks, you ease back into your stride and the production and presentation of the right words in the right order.

And if none of this works?

Seventh Suggestion. Close, relax, start again tomorrow.

With the best will in the world and the diligent adherence to these recommendations, your block may not end in a day, a week or even a month. Thus must you continue to implement these suggestions even when they may not be immediately helpful.

Therefore, begin each writing day as you always have, at your usual time, and with your usual matutinal rites. Do not skip a single one. Similarly eat at the usual times; run your usual errands in the usual way. And above all, close your shop at the usual time with the usual activities, such as preparing reference materials for next day usage. Never stay up late forcing yourself every step of the way; that may well have been a contributing factor to the blockage in the first place.

Guaranteed results.

Follow these steps, and I guarantee your days of obstacles, impediments, blocks and absolutely no progress will be history soon enough. Moreover, because you have experienced what is often a terrifying situation, you are better prepared to see it coming and take immediate action to overcome it. Once you do, dance the "Maniac" gyrations for yourself. They'll put you in just the right frame of mind to produce that Niagara of high energy language, the kind your readers are thrilled you never stop writing and always produce so predictably and so well.
